Becoming an Independent Artist

Dear Panelists:
My name is Hailey Newman, and my project was to create an EP of 3 original songs and work with a producer to upload them onto major music streaming services. I wanted to learn the steps to creating a song so I could have independence in my music career. I have been making music for a few years and I’ve learned that you lose control once you don’t know how something works. That’s not to say that collaboration doesn’t make a great song, however, the more you can do on your own, the closer you get to the sound you want. This project was about taking control. I did this with the help of my mentor Jesse Crosson, vocal coach Amber Morris and LogicPro instructor Grub Mitchell.
There are many connections you must make and many people who get involved with just one song. From writing, creating demos, finding a producer, and pitching my songs to playlists, I’ve learned to do this all on my own. The 4 stages of this process are organized in the checkpoints of my website. Each checkpoint is formatted in the order of reflection, evidence of communication, and evidence of the work I’ve done. Checkpoint one showcases the songwriting process, checkpoint two is the recording process, checkpoint three is the production process and checkpoint four is the marketing/uploading process.
The most important aspect of my senior project was that I am now able to take control of my sound and brand as an artist. I can record myself from my bedroom, make demos with my knowledge of LogicPro and I know how to market myself in a successful manner. I am so much more confident in my music than I was a year ago when I was relying entirely on other people to make my music. As you make your way through my website, it will take you on my journey of becoming an independent artist!
Respectfully,
Hailey Newman
